But when someone breaks down the math and shows the upfront costs of starting a business, scaling Mount Everest in a pair of flip-flops seems more feasible. Let’s break it down.

A man on X says his friend wants to open a small deli in California, and apparently, the cheapest workable space he found was $14,000 a month, which means he would owe close to $500 a day before even selling a single sandwich. Even before hiring staff, buying meat, paying utilities, handling insurance, pulling permits, dealing with taxes, building out the space, or getting one customer through the door, you're already running on the small business hamster wheel.

Starting a business in California is insane. Looked at a 2,500 sqft spot in the Valley yesterday and the guy wanted $14,000 a month in rent. That’s basically $500 a day before you even unlock the door.

Then add employees, insurance, utilities, taxes, inventory, and all the other bills that come with running a business, and you’d probably need to do $4k+ a day in sales just to make it make sense. People wonder why so many small businesses struggle or never even get started.

The rent price is the real gut punch here. $14k a month? That's insane, and while rent can certainly vary across the state, the greater Los Angeles area reported rent at about $2.32 per square foot per month in 2025. And in the bougier part of west LA, retail space was reported at $4.46 per square. Also, these are often "triple-net leases" where tenants pay a base rent plus additional property expenses, so the advertised rent isn't even the full bill.

Then comes the dreaded labor costs...

California’s statewide minimum wage is $16.90 an hour in 2026, and the state notes that some cities and counties have higher local minimum wages. For a food business that needs people on-site every day, labor costs will stack up fast before the owner even gets to payroll taxes, training, scheduling, and turnover.

Then there's the basic costs of simply existing as a business in California. The Franchise Tax Board says every LLC doing business or organized in California must pay an $800 annual tax, even if it's not actively conducting business. That's not necessarily the most outrageous cost, but it just proves that California starts billing you before the business even has a pulse.

DEBRIEFING

California has long sold itself as the place where people go to build something bigger. And sure, opportunity still exists on some level, but it's not an easy road.

A small deli sounds modest on paper, but when it's being opened in the "great state" of California, suddenly it turns into a sh*t show. When rent alone can run hundreds of dollars a day before inventory, labor, insurance, utilities, permits, taxes, and buildout costs even enter the picture, having a small business starts looking less like opportunity and more like a financial obstacle course.

California still has customers, money, talent, and demand. But you can't deny that the cost structure there is increasingly favoring companies with deep pockets, legal teams, and enough capital to bleed through the early months.
