The label says organic. But the loaf still came from a machine.

BRIEFING

Grant here. You know "organic" or "healthy" bread is usually not a textural treat. Well, unless you like to look like wolverine eating your morning toast as your teeth grind through an endless variety of seeds, nuts, and fibers. But add some wood chips to the mix, and you're basically chowing down like a woodchuck. Let’s break it down.

There's a viral TikTok video of a woman who claims that she's found actual particles of wood in a slice of Dave's Killer Bread. And apparently not just tiny, little shavings or harmless-looking specks, but visible pieces allegedly spread throughout the loaf.

The mother says she was about to feed a sandwich to her daughter when she noticed something strange while cutting off the crust. At first, she says she tried to talk herself out of it, wondering if the pieces were just grains, oats, or part of the bread’s normal seed-heavy texture. But then she says she realized the pieces were wood chips, and after checking the loaf, she found them throughout the bread.

The X post that shared the video also claims the issue has already been reported to the FDA and notes that Dave's is among the top organic bread brands in the U.S.

Dave's Killer Bread is the top-selling organic sliced bread brand in the US

DEBRIEFING

Dave’s Killer Bread has built its brand around the premium “clean food” lane. Its own site describes the brand as organic, whole-grain, packed with seeds and grains, and made with organic and non-GMO ingredients. The nutrition page says its products are “Always USDA Organic” and “Always Non-GMO,” with whole grain nutrition and no high-fructose corn syrup.

And that kind of marketing is exactly why so many Americans will pay top dollar for it.

People gravitate towards brands like Dave's because they feel like they're making a "safer choice." Which just further highlights the irony that this woman found alleged wood particles in the bread.

Just to be clear and not spread fake news, this one video doesn't prove 100% that Dave's in fact does contain wood chips. So, as of now, this should be framed as an allegation unless a recall, FDA notice, or company statement confirms more. But foreign-object food complaints are serious enough that the FDA has a reporting process for problems with FDA-regulated products, and FoodSafety.gov directs consumers with non-meat food product issues to report them through the FDA Safety Reporting Portal or by calling 888-SAFEFOOD.

And again, according to the X post, this has been reported to the FDA.

The bag said "clean." The bread said, "check again."
