If the fertility rate is real, the population number can’t be.

China’s population story only works if the math doesn’t matter.

When a regime controls the count, headcounts become propaganda.

BRIEFING

Jett here. China keeps telling the world it has this giant 1.4 billion-person population, but the more you look at the math, the more that number starts smelling like regime-run fiction. And if the headcount is fake, then a whole lot more than the headcount is fake. Let’s get into it.

What makes this story so interesting is that it's not some gut feeling or a “trust me, bro” conspiracy. It's one big fat math problem. The basic argument is brutally simple: if China really grew from roughly 500 million in 1950 to around 1.24 or 1.27 billion by 2000, then Chinese women would have had to average something like four and a half to five and a half children over that span. But those numbers collide with everything else we know about China, from famine and political upheaval to decades of the one-child-only policy and, officially, their very low fertility rates. That's the first big crack in the story... but there's more.

The debate gets even weirder. If China’s official fertility rate was around 1.7 from 1990 to 2020, while India’s was much higher, how exactly was China still able to stay ahead of India thirty years later? Doesn't add up. The math isn't "mathing."

This whole thing isn't just politically suspicious. It's now mathematically impossible to defend. The estimate China is looking at is more like 900 million, maybe 800 million, and under a harsher fertility assumption, even 700 million by 2020.

Now, the next question is, why lie?

Because a fake giant population does a helluva lotta work for Beijing. It helps sell the image of this unstoppable scale. It props up the myth of an economic super-mass nobody can challenge. It also helps justify central control, national prestige, global leverage, manufacturing dominance, military weight, and the general aura that China is this civilizational giant marching toward the future while everyone else sits there in a state of panic. Big numbers create psychological power. They scare rivals, impress investors, flatter national pride, and make the regime look bigger than life. A smaller, older, weaker, faster-shrinking China is a very different story, and not one the CCP wants to market. It's weak.

Then COVID enters the picture, and that's where this whole thing starts getting even weirder. China’s true population may have been much lower even before the pandemic, and the pandemic death toll may have taken that already inflated/fake number and blown an even bigger hole through it. China is touting an absurdly low official COVID death count. But those numbers are likely the same kind of lie as the fake population. China reportedly stopped publishing parts of its funeral-industry data while local crematorium expansion kept moving. If that part is true, then this is a regime-scale cover-up story.

I thought this clip was fascinating. It walks through the fertility math, the one-child-policy contradiction, the India comparison, and the darker possibility that China’s real population is nowhere near what the regime has been selling to the world.

DEBRIEFING

If China is bullshitting the world about something this basic and easy to debunk, then what else has been padded, polished, buried, or flat-out invented by the regime? Population isn't some side stat. It is the base layer underneath labor, housing, consumption, military manpower, public health, economic growth, and long-term state survival. Get that number wrong on purpose, and you're lying about the whole machine.

NOW YOU KNOW

China may not be hiding a number. It may be hiding a collapse.
