The fastest way to lose a perk is to treat it like an entitlement.

BRIEFING
Grant here. Honestly, who doesn't love a complimentary bread basket? When that little basket of warm, doughy goodness arrives at your table, it's debatably one of the best parts of the meal, mainly because it's food you're not necessarily paying for. Well, at least for now. Because the latest trend of "dining and dashing" might start making complimentary bread a thing of the past. Let’s break it down.
In this video clip, a mom takes her kids to Longhorn Steakhouse for a nice family meal, but with prices being "sky high," they decided to eat their fill of complimentary bread instead of actually ordering something.
And you can see in the video, there are no drinks on the table, just the bread, some butter, plates, and cutlery.

DEBRIEFING
Look, eating out is ridiculously expensive nowadays. No one is arguing that. But this is mooching on a whole other level. Actually, it's bordering on full-on theft.
Sure, it's just bread and butter. Definitely not something that's going to cost restaurants like Longhorn an arm and leg. But, if this does truly start to spread and become more common, that's when it could become a problem. Both logistically and societally.
You also have to factor in how it's affecting the staff. You have waiters who work on tips or commission from meals, dishwashers who have to clean their plates and tables, and the kitchen staff who have to cook up the bread. This isn't just affecting the restaurant, but it's negatively impacting regular staff as well.
Let's also highlight the fact that bread isn’t actually free. It’s factored into the cost structure and built around the idea that most people sitting at those tables are ordering meals. So when someone pulls up and just eats something "free," it still ends up being a cost that other diners will absorb.
And again, if this type of behavior grows, you can bet that complimentary bread will be a thing of the past, portions will become smaller, and policies will be tighter.
And suddenly, that lovely perk of the bread basket will be gone. Because someone was too ignorant and entitled to see how their behavior impacts everyone else.
NOW YOU KNOW
What feels like a win in the moment is what removes the perk later.

Is anyone at all surprised? Go to a nice, or once nice vacation place, like Ocean City Md, and see who eats an expensive meal, than runs out of the establishment without paying causing the local gendarmes to chase them, all for a few plates of $75 seafood. Unreal, really a freakin joke that some in society want fine things ( or just decent things) and not pay for it, through hard work and sacrifice. Sickens me, and its the same characters, each and every time/ I saw this eat and run trick 3 times in OCM, between 2017-2020. When I first went there in 2005 this was a distant dream to slimeballs like these. And that’s why places, such as OCM, have their costs go through the roof, and we the responsible have to pay for the scum of society. Pretty soon a card or some form a payment will be required, BEFORE we eat. And things such as bread will be only served in the meal. And the fact this vermin is polluting the minds of these young, soon to be criminals, is even more of a tragedy…for us!
