Grant here. When a lot of people think of Hawaii, instantly a dreamy, tropical, and serene paradise comes to mind. But that's the expectation, not always the reality, and according to some folks that've visited Honolulu recently, the place has become a real sh*thole. Let’s break it down.
There's a TikTok video gaining views of a young woman walking through Waikiki on her first day in Honolulu, and she's super let down by the reality of the city. Within seconds, she calls it a dump, says the vibes are off, and questions why she even came.
She points to homelessness, worn-down areas, and what she sees as a disconnect between the high-end storefronts and everything else around them. In her words, this isn’t the Hawaii people romanticize. Not even close.

And she's not the only one complaining about Honolulu, as there are others who've taken to social media to expose the not-so-serene atmosphere of the city.

And even more, there's apparently a methadone clinic that's majorly bringing down the vibes as well...
@hawaiirightnow Many are saying that the amount of lingering addicts on the streets of Downtown Honolulu have exploded, and many blame Champ Methadone Clinic. Due to a middle school being right across the street, Champ Methadone Clinic was supposed to control addicts from lingering on the streets. However, many have reported addicts lingering all hours of the day in front of the clinic and all the way down the block. This is happening in full view of young children and some have to walk right past it. Amazing how they're ok with middle school kid's across the street witnessing this day after day, year after year. Some of the addicts are alleged to be doing drugs or extremely high and incoherent in broad daylight. Shocking submitted footage shows this happening a stone's throw from @govjoshgreen mansion at Washington Place. Should the government do something asap? The truth is, a lot of places today are sold as a curated "image," especially on social media. They only show the beaches, sunsets, perfect weather, and perfectly designed experiences. It doesn't just happen to Hawaii, it happens to all sorts of places like Rome, Paris, Bali, etc.
So when people actually show up to these highly edited places, their expectations are often crushed. Not because anything is necessarily wrong with these destinations, but just the expectations on social media have often been raised too high.
Also, Waikiki isn’t some remote island paradise. It’s a dense, heavily trafficked urban area that happens to sit on one of the most recognizable coastlines in the world. And like any major city, it has visible problems, and sure, in recent years, it's probably gone down the tubes a bit. Like a lot of other American cities.
However, even with all of those logical explanations, first impressions are everything, and when those land the wrong way, everything starts to go downhill pretty fast.
So is Honolulu really a sh*thole? Well, that's all open to interpretation really.
What's clear is that this city is not the tropical paradise like some other spots in Hawaii. If that's what you want, go to Maui, the Big Island, or Kauai.

I lived on Oahu on 18 Ave behind Diamond Head for 15 years between 1977-1992. It was pretty good. I drew caricatures in Waikiki and later made the Taro Patch Doll in Kakaako. But the writing soon appeared on the walls when it became evident to me that the color-coded governors were selected and ALL democrats. The state only cares for one industry and that’s tourism. They even pay junkies over a 100 a week. It is governed like a 3rd World country and indeed has become a sh*thole.
Please explain to me what you mean in the headline by using the word “becoming”.
