BRIEFING

Grant here. Freckles used to be something people covered with makeup. This often genetic skin feature has long been considered sort of "nerdy" or even, in a lot of cases, unwanted. I mean, a lot of people born with freckles even get them lasered off. However, trends have shifted, and now freckles are being permanently etched into skin, all in the name of looking naturally "effortless." Let’s break it down.

A video on social media shows a young woman excitedly revealing the freckles she just tattooed onto her face, reassuring viewers that while they look “scary” now, they will fade into something more "natural." As she puts it, they'll fade by about 60% by the time they've healed.

SOURCE

This is just yet again a prime example of what happens when influencer culture turns even imperfection into a curated aesthetic. It's like, where does this perpetual chase for "perfection" end? And what's next? Tattooing crow's feet on your face?

The comments were, of course, pretty hilarious on this video...

"Wtf I spent my childhood being miserable with freckles now people are wanting them?"

"What’s next tattooing wrinkles?"

"I spent my childhood rubbing lemon juice on my face - thanks to Jan Brady - to try to get rid of them. She's going to regret these tats."

"Seriously why?? I had a face full & arms, chest, covered. Got called names like Freckle face Strawberry, & others not as nice. Most disappeared in my 30’s-40’s. Bought products to cover them. Now, they’re paying for them? Haha A fool and her money are soon parted."

And it's not just this lady who's taking a needle and ink to her skin. Just a quick gander online and you'll see hundreds of thousands of women who are paying good money to have these little marks of melanin all over their face.

DEBRIEFING

For eons, freckles were something girls were told to cover, and in recent decades, flawless skin became the standard. Now the pendulum has swung again, and these "imperfections" are being intentionally added back in, all in the name of looking more "youthful" and effortless.

I mean, you look at those videos above, and when these women get the tattooed freckles, they're comically prominent on their faces. Then they fade and heal. Then these women put makeup on top of it, and boom, the "freckles" are gone again. Like honestly, what is the point?

This is just yet again another insane example of the lengths people will go to; in this case, it's predominantly women to gain this influencer idea of "beauty" or "perfection."

But at the end of the day, it's a fad. Nothing more, nothing less. And you know that when these women are in their 70s or 80s, they're going to be looking back at their trendy little "freckle" tattoos with some big regrets.
