BRIEFING
Grant here. SNAP benefits are one of those government benefits that seems to constantly be steeped in controversy. Whether it's a question of eligibility or fraud, this program is always raising eyebrows. But this latest case is just downright tragic. An 85 year old widow thought her food assistance was settled until the government came back years later with an "error," and now she's on the hook for $9k. Let’s break it down.
Jerilee King, who lives alone on roughly $1,300 a month in Social Security, had been receiving SNAP benefits for more than three years after the state told her she qualified. The support helped her immensely, covering basic groceries and giving her some financial breathing room. But then the assistance suddenly stopped, and a letter followed explaining why.
State officials acknowledged they had made an eligibility mistake back in 2021 that allowed SNAP benefits to be issued in error. Because of that correction, King now owes nearly $9,000 in overpayments and faces a federal collection process that can garnish up to 15% of her Social Security each month.
Now, this poor woman, at the age of 85, is having to face the reality of going back to work in order to pay off this debt.

DEBRIEFING
In reality, this story isn't just tragic, but it's also downright infuriating.
You see so many people receiving SNAP benefits, including migrants and even refugees, but yet, this woman who's living off $1,300 a month in Social Security is somehow ineligible.
But, not only is she ineligible, but because of their error, the government is now forcing this woman to actually pay back the benefits she received. This entire case is unjust on a multitude of levels.
It's also yet another reason for a lack of public trust in the SNAP program.
When you see people proudly filling up their carts full of junk food, or even in some cases selling their benefits for cash, stories like Jerilee King’s become just that much more egregious.
Now, of course, in King's case, she's the unfortunate victim of the automatic system built into SNAP and other government assistance programs to detect fraud. There's no evidence to show that she was specifically targeted. However, whether or not she was targeted, she's still suffering the consequences of their own error, and frankly, the optics here don't look good. Especially for a program geared at "helping people."
NOW YOU KNOW
The mistake was theirs. The debt is hers.
