By responding the way she did, she made him look inflated and unnecessary, and once that happened, Tom started to deflate.

Once Tom's air was gone, so was his power. Without the fancy jargon and moral theater to hide behind, Tom's performance collapsed, and what was left was a man stripped of all his stature.
